	Description
	Actonel [Risedronate] is an oral medication in a form of tablets of 5mg 30mg 35mg 75mg and 150mg. Actonel is consisted of Risedronate sodium as an active ingredient and other inactive ingredients. Actonel [Risedronate] is in a group of medicines called bisphosphonates which is used to strengthen bone alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body and slows down bone loss while increasing bone mass. It may even prevent bone fractures. Actonel is used for the treatment of Osteoporosis where the bone mineral density is reduced bone micro-architecture is disrupted and amount and variety of non-collageous proteins in bone is altered and Paget’s disease of bone also known as osteitis deformans a chronic disorder resulting enlarged and deformed bones.


	How to use
	Actonel [Risedronate] should be administered as prescribed by the physician. Actonel tablets come in different strengths. Some tablets are administered once a day or once a week or once or twice a month. Actonel of 5mg should be taken daily once a day or 35mg once a week or 75mg twice a month or 150mg once a month. Weekly and monthly dose should be taken at the same time. Dosing totally depends on the physician. Actonel should be taken preferably empty stomach first in the morning 30 minutes before first food or drink taken other than water. It should be swallowed whole with a full glass of plain drinking water only. Patient should stand or sit upright while administering Actonel and should not lie down or recline for at least 30 minutes after taking Actonel. Other medicines including vitamins calcium and antacids should not be taken for at least 30 minutes after the administration of Actonel.


	Side Effects
	Not everyone who takes Actonel will experience side effects. In fact it is tolerated quite well. Side effects occur in most cases are minor needs no treatment or can be treated by the patient or the healthcare provider. The most common side effects of Actonel are joint pain back pain abdominal painhigh blood pressure urinary tract infection and diarrhea. Other adverse effects reported are weakness dizziness muscle pain leg cramps neck pain nausea and prostate enlargement in men. Other possible side effects include anemia gas depression infections hernia tumors chest pain cataracts and pneumonia. There are some serious side effects reported during the medication of Actonel. Though very rare but should be reported to the physician immediately. Serious side effects are throat pain chest pain or difficulty in swallowing which could be a sign of esophageal ulcer caused by the accumulation of risedronate sodium in the esophagus prolonged heartburn severe bone joint or muscle pain jaw or tooth problem anxiety and allergic reactions.


	Drug Interaction
	Medicines that can lead to Actonel [Risedronate] drug interactions are calcium iron supplements aspirin magnesium products teriparatide and Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Aspirin magnesium products and NSAIDs when combined with Actonel can cause irritation in stomach. Calcium products teriparatide and iron supplements when combined with Actonel makes Actonel less effective.


	Uses
	Actonel [Risedronate] is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in men. It is used for preventing and treating both men and women who take steroids. Actonel [Risedronate] is used for preventing and treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is also used for Paget’s disease of bone in both men and women.


	Storage
	Actonel [Risedronate] should be stored at controlled temperature between 20 o-25 oC 68 o-77 oF.
