	Description
	Adalat [Nifedipine] is the brand name while nifedipine is the ingredient manufactured by the famous medicine company Generic. Adalat [Nifedipine] is an extended release tablet dosage in the form of calcium channel blocker nifedipine. Adalat is a heart and blood pressure medication. Its appearance is yellow crystalline substance which is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol. The tablets vary in the content of nifedipine. They either contain 30 60 or 90 mg of nifedipine for oral administration. Nifedipine acts directly on the vascular smooth muscle and is a peripheral arterial vasodilator. Nifedipine belongs to a class of medications which are known as calcium channel blockers. The blood flow is made to flow easily by nifedipine which helps in relaxing the blood vessels. The tablets of Adalat consist of an external coat and an internal core. Both these internal core and external coat contain nifedipine the external coat acts as a slow release formulation and the internal core works as a fast release formulation. Adalat is the best anti-hypertensive drug. Reducing high blood pressure helps in preventing strokes heart attacks and kidney problems. Adalat is contraindicated in persons who have known hypersensitivity to nifedipine. Adalat is a drug for hypertension. Adalat helps in increasing your ability to exercise and helps in reducing the frequency of angina attacks. This anti-hypertensive medicine should be taken regularly to be effective. In case of attacks of chest pain this medicine should not be taken on the contrary other medicines like sublingual nitroglycerin should be taken to relieve the chest pain attacks as directed by your doctor. Adalat is used for the treatment of heart and blood pressure complaints. In case you miss any of your dose avoid doubling your dose to compensate with the missed dose.


	How to use
	The dose of Adalat [Nifedipine] is adjusted as per the requirements of the patient. Adalat [Nifedipine] is prescribed orally once a day on emplty stomach. The medication should be swallowed as a whole not chewed or divided or crushed. The medicine should not be taken with food. Generally the maintenance dose is 30mg to 60mg once in a day. The medicine should be taken regularly at the same time of the day everyday. The medicine should be taken regularly even if you are feeling well. Your doctor may gradually reduce the dose. Grapefruit should be avoided while taking Adalat.


	Side Effects
	Adalat [Nifedipine] adverse effects observed are peripheral edema headache dizziness nausea flushing constipation cramps sexual complaints swelling of the ankles/feet shortness of breath weakness tiredness fast/slow/irregular heartbeat fainting mood changes swollen/tender gums vision changes serious allergic reaction etc.


	Drug Interaction
	Before starting to take Adalat [Nifedipine] medication inform your doctor regarding all the medicines taken by you especially: acarbose alpha blockers beta blockers digoxin fentanyl melatonin quinidine drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove nifedipine from your body benzodiazepines cimetidine cyclosporine digoxin erythromycin flecainide fluconazole imipramine itraconazole ketoconazole Phenobarbital phenytoin propafenone ranitidine warfarin etc.


	Notes
	Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to nifedipine. Good dental hygiene decreases the chance and severity of gum swelling. Brush your teeth regularly and schedule dental cleanings every 6 months. The extended-release tablet does not dissolve in the stomach after being swallowed. It slowly releases medicine as it passes through your small intestines.
