	Description
	Aldara [Imiquimod] is a cream based medication acts as an immune response modifier. The active ingredient of Aldara is Imiquimod. Each gram of Aldara [Imiquimod] contains 50mg of imiquimod. Imiquimod present in Aldara activates immune cells through Toll-Like Receptor 7 TLR7 which are an immune gene possessed by humans other mammals and additionally in avian species. When Aldara is applied to skin imiquimod present in Aldara leads to the activation of langerhans cells which subsequently migrates to local lymph nodes to activate adaptive immune system. Aldara is a patient-applied cream used for most common type of skin cancer treatment called basal cell carcinoma and superficial squamous cell carcinoma on skin and lips. Aldara is used for actinic keratosis treatment also known as solar keratosis which is a premalignant condition of thick scaly and crusty patches of skin commonly found in fair-skinned people those who are frequently exposed to sun. Aldara is used for external genital and perianal warts treatments. Aldara helps the body fight the virus instead of just getting rid of the warts. So Aldara cream actually does the warts treatment inside out.


	How to use
	Aldara [Imiquimod] is not for oral intravaginal or ophthalmic use related to eyes and its diseases. The application frequency for Aldara cream is different for each indications and symptoms. Patient should wash their hands before applying the cream with a mild soap and water and allow the area to dry thoroughly for at least 10 minutes. Aldara should be applied to the entire treatment area and rubbed in until it’s no more visible. Not more than 1 packet of Aldara cream should be applied to the contiguous treatment area at each application. Aldara cream should be applied preferably at bed time. Discard the open packet and hands should be washed after applying. Leave the cream for a certain period of time and then wash the area with mild soap and water. Unused and partially used packs should be discarded. For the treatment of actinic keratosis Aldara cream should be applied 2 times a week e.g. Mondays and Thursdays or Tuesdays and Fridays for a full 16 weeks to a defined treatment area. Leave the cream for approximately 8 hours. For the treatment of Skin cancer Basal cell Carcinoma apply Aldara cream 5 times a week e.g. Mondays to Fridays for a full 6 weeks. Leave the cream for approximately 8 hours. For the treatment of external genital and perianal warts apply Aldara cream 3 times a week e.g. Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays or Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays for a maximum of 16 weeks. Leave the cream for approximately 6-10 hours. Aldara cream should continue until the warts are completely gone. Aldara cream is indicated for the treatment of patients 12 years and above.


	Side Effects
	During the use of Aldara [Imiquimod] cream for the treatment of genital and anal warts non specific inflammation can occur where the skin is traumatized from scratching or between skin folds. Aldara for the treatment of skin cancer and precancerous growth often follows with discomfort pain blisters black dried crust known as eschar also known as black wound. Use of Aldara includes other side effects like headache tiredness muscle aches back pain diarrhea swollen lymph nodes flu-like symptoms and viral infections.


	Drug Interaction
	Before using Aldara [Imiquimod] doctor should be informed about the pregnancy medical history especially of any drug allergies previous drug or surgical treatment of genital or anal wart area or any skin conditions. Sexual contact should be avoided while Aldara is applied. It weakens condoms and vaginal diaphragms. Do not start or stop the treatment without physician approval.


	Notes
	Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Also if you have any surgery or medical treatment for any skin conditions inform your doctor about the same prior to starting treatment with this medicine.


	Missed Dose
	As per your doctors advice apply your next dose as directed do not double applications to make up for a missed one. Follow the schedule as directed by your doctor.


	Uses
	Aldara [Imiquimod] is used for the treatment of external genital and anal warts minor form of skin cancer like basal cell carcinoma and superficial squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis. Aldara is also used for external genital and perianal warts treatments.
