	Description
	Aleve [Naproxen] is an oral medication available in a form of shaped tablets and gel capsules with strength of 220mg. Active Aleve ingredient is Naproxen sodium. Aleve [Naproxen] is a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs. Aleve [Naproxen] is commonly used for the reduction of moderate to severe pain fever inflammation and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis rheumatoid arthritis psoriatic arthritis gout ankylosing spondylitis tendinitis menstrual cramps and treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Aleve drug is also used to reduce fever and minor ache or pain due to common cold and flu. Prostaglandins are a chemical responsible for pain fever and inflammation. Aleve works by inhibiting both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes which make prostaglandins thus reducing the level of prostaglandins.


	How to use
	Aleve [Naproxen] dosage has to be taken orally with a glass of water. The recommended dose is 2 tablets or gel capsules daily with a gap of 8 to 12 hours for not more than 10 days as prescribed on the label or otherwise directed by the physician. The physician can recommend up to a maximum of 3 tablets or gel capsules in 24 hours. Elderly should not take more than 1 tablet in 12 hours. After taking Aleve drug the patient should not lie down for at least 30 minutes. To prevent stomach upset this medication has to be taken with food milk or an antacid.


	Side Effects
	Aleve [Naproxen] drug may sometimes cause serious bleeding from stomach or intestines. This Aleve side effect can occur without any warning. Elderly patients are more prone to this adverse effect. Blood clotting is also a rare but serious side effect which can cause serious heart attacks or strokes. Other rare but serious side effects are liver disease dark urine black stool vomit that looks like coffee grounds chest pain continuous acute stomach or abdominal pain sudden vision changes slurred speech shortness of breath and weakness on one side of the body. Other Aleve side effects are nausea heartburn constipation headache tiredness drowsiness dizziness Upset stomach diarrhea painful swallowing tachycardia tinnitus fainting and change in amount of urine.


	Drug Interaction
	Naproxen sodium present in Aleve inhibits the excretion of sodium and lithium like any other NSAIDs. So extreme care should be taken by the patients who use Aleve drug along with lithium supplements. Aleve [Naproxen] is not recommended for use with NSAIDs of salicylate family such as Aspirin. The drugs may reduce each others effects. Aleve is not recommended for use with anticoagulants because it may increase the risk of bleeding. Aleve contains sodium and is not recommended for use in patients with sodium-sensitive hypertension due to potential adverse effects on blood pressure.


	Uses
	Aleve [Naproxen] drug is used to treat moderate pain to severe pain and reduces inflammation. It is used to treat headaches muscle aches dental pain menstrual cramps athletic injuries and arthritis. Aleve is also used to reduce fever.


	Storage
	Aleve [Naproxen] drug should be stored at a room temperature between 15°-30°C 59°-86°F away from direct sunlight heat and moisture. Keep away from children and pets.


	Precaution
	Aleve [Naproxen] drug should not be used right before or after hear bypass surgery as it has a tendency of blood clotting. Use of Aleve during the last 6 months of pregnancy is not recommended because it increases the risk of having a child with congenital birth defects particularly heart anomalies. Nursing mothers should consult the physician before taking this medication. Daily use of alcohol especially when combined with Aleve may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
