	Description
	Alphagan [Brimonidine] is an eye drop consists of an active ingredient Brimonidine and other inactive ingredients. Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops is used for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma or chronic glaucoma or high fluid pressure in the eye also known as Ocular hypertension the most common type of glaucoma affecting 70 percent to 80 percent of those who suffer from this disorder. Lowering high fluid pressure in the eye reduces the risk of vision loss nerve damage or blindness. Alphagan [Brimonidine] ophthalmic solution lowers the pressure in the eye by reducing the amount of fluid formed in the eye and also allowing better fluid drainage from within the eye which is known as alpha agonist. Brimonidine present in Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops is also used for the people suffering from poor night vision after Lasik or PRK surgery.


	How to use
	There are few instructions which are strictly to be followed for applying Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops. Firstly the hands should be washed properly. To avoid contamination the dropper tip should not be touched or let it touch the eye or any other surface. Patient wearing contact lenses should remove them before using this medication. Wait at least for 15 minutes after applying Alphagan eye drops before putting in contact lens. To apply tilt head backward look upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Hold the dropper directly over the eye and insert one drop. Look downward and gently close the eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Apply gentle pressure at the corner of the eye placing a finger at the near the nose to prevent the medication from draining out. Do not blink and do not rub the eye while administering the medication. Repeat these steps for the other eye if so directed by your doctor. Usually Alphagan is administered three times daily or as directed by the physician. Do not rinse the dropper. Place the dropper cap properly after the use. Patient has to wait for at least 5 minutes before applying any other eye medications in form of drops or ointment if in use. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the eye drops to enter the eye. Try to use Alphagan at the same times each day. Alphagan eye drops should not be stopped using without consulting the physician. Immediately inform the physician if the condition worsens.


	Side Effects
	Most common adverse effects found using Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops are allergic conjunctivitis conjunctival hyperemia and eye pruritus or itching of eyes. Other common Alphagan [Brimonidine] side effects includes conjunctival folliculosis burning sensation ocular allergic reaction visual disturbance oral dryness hypertension conjunctival edema conjunctival hemorrhage epiphora eye discharge eye dryness eye irritation gastrointestinal disorder sinus infection tearing vitreous disorder corneal erosion hordeolum nasal dryness and taste perversion. The list includes depression bradycardia slow heart rate tachycardia fast heart rate miosis constriction of the pupil of the eye hypothermia nausea and skin reaction.


	Drug Interaction
	Brimonidine present in Alphagan eye drops could be absorbed into the bloodstream in low amounts after application to the eye and it could therefore interact with other medicines that are taken by mouth injection skin patch or suppository. Doctor should be prior informed about other medicines which are already in use. Medications such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAOIs tricyclic antidepressants and related antidepressants like mianserin if in use applying Alphagan eye drops is not safe.


	Uses
	Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops are used for the treatment of high fluid pressure in the eye known as Ocular hypertension. It is also used for the patients suffering from poor night vision inducing miosis.


	Storage
	Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops should be stored at or below 25°C 77°F away from light and moisture. Do not freeze.


	Precaution
	Alphagan [Brimonidine] eye drops contain preservative benzalkonium chloride which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause eye irritation. Soft contact lenses should be removed before putting Alphagan eye drops. Wait for at least 15 minutes after using the drops before putting the contact lenses back in place. Alphagan eye drops may cause blurred or abnormal vision fatigue and drowsiness. So the patient should be careful about the time and the place of applying Alphagan eye drops.
