	Description
	Altace [Ramipril] medicine is supplied as hard shell capsules for oral administration. Altace [Ramipril] drug is composed of Ramipril as an active ingredient and other inactive ingredients. Altace is available in different strength 1.25mg 2.5mg 5mg and 10mg. Altace medicine is called an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitor or ACE inhibitor which is a chemical compound that helps to create protein named angiotensin II. Angiotensin II raises the blood pressure narrowing the blood vessels. Altace [Ramipril] lowers the blood pressure by inhibiting the production of ACE in the body and therefore relaxing arterial muscles while at the same time enlarging the arteries allowing the heart to pump more blood more easily through larger passageways.


	How to use
	The healthcare provider will recommend the dose which is felt the best suited for according to the prevailing condition. Unless otherwise instructed the initial dosage should be 1.25mg of Altace once daily. For the treatment of reducing the risk of myocardial infarction stroke and death from cardiovascular causes the initial recommended dose should be 2.5mg of Altace [Ramipril] once daily for a week 5mg once daily for next 3 weeks and can be increased to 10mg daily as maintenance dose. For the treatment of hypertensive patients those who are not taking diuretic the recommended dose is 2.5mg of Altace once daily. The usual maintenance dosage range is 2.5mg to 20mg daily. Dosage should be adjusted according to the response of blood pressure. If blood pressure cannot be controlled by Altace alone diuretic can be added. For heart failure post myocardial infarction the initial recommended dose is 2.5mg of Altace twice daily. If the patient becomes hypotensive switch the dose to 1.25mg twice daily. If tolerated the dosage should be increased to 5mg of Altace twice daily. For patients with hypertension and kidney damage the recommended initial dose is 1.25mg of Altace once daily and can be increased to a maximum total daily dose of 5mg. For patients with heart failure and kidney failure the recommended initial dose is 1.25mg of Altace once daily and can be increased to 1.25mg twice daily to a maximum of 2.5mg twice daily.


	Side Effects
	Altace [Ramipril] side effects vary according to the Altace medication applied for and its intensity. The most common side effects recorded were dizziness light-headedness dry cough impotency or decreased sex drive and fatigue for the treatment of hypertension. Adverse effects recorded in the treatment of heart failure post myocardial infarction were nausea vomiting vertigo syncope or fainting hypotension diarrhea and abnormal kidney function. Other side effects recorded with the treatment of Altace medicine are palpitations hemolytic anemia edema kidney failure liver failure hepatitis jaundice abdominal pain anorexia dry mouth constipation dysphagia photosensitivity anxiety amnesia depression hearing loss insomnia tinnitus or ringing in ears nervousness vision disturbance arthritis edema increased sweating and weight gain. Decrease in hemoglobin increase in blood sugar level serum bilirubin and uric acid has occurred to the patients receiving Altace medicine.


	Drug Interaction
	When Altace [Ramipril] and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents are administered concurrently renal failure and increase in serum potassium may occur. Patients administering Altace and diuretics concurrently can experience an excessive reduction of blood pressure. Patients taking injectable gold and Altace can suffer from nitritoid reactions. When Altace [Ramipril] medicine is taken with potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics risk of hyperkalemia increases. The risk of lithium toxicity increases when Altace is administered with lithium. Benefits of Altace are observed among patients who are taking aspirin or other anti-platelet agents beta-blockers and lipid-lowering agents as well as diuretics and calcium channel blockers.


	Uses
	Altace [Ramipril] medicine is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It may be also be used along with combination of thiazide diuretics. Altace [Ramipril] medication is also administered to the elderly patients for reduction in risk of myocardial infarction or commonly known as heart attack stroke and death from cardiovascular causes. It is also treated for heart failure post myocardial infarction. Apart from these it is used to prevent kidney failure due to high blood pressure and diabetes.


	Storage
	Altace [Ramipril] should be stored at a room temperature between 15°-30°C 59°-86°F.


	Precaution
	Altace [Ramipril] should be discontinued when pregnancy is detected. Altace can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. Nursing mothers should not administer Altace. Patients with severe congestive heart failure whose kidney function may depend on the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system treatment with Altace may be associated with oliguria and or progressive azotemia and rarely with acute kidney failure or even death.
