Description
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] is prescribed for use as an anti-inflammatory and is used as a topical formulation. It belongs to the class of drugs known as synthetic corticosteroid which imitates the action of hydrocortisone which is the natural steroid that is present in human body. This medication is also known to be prescribed by doctors for suppressing immune responses. This medication may be prescribed for purposes other than the ones stated above.
How to use
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] is a topical formulation which is available as a cream. It is to be applied directly onto the skin. A thin strip of the cream is to be spread gently on the area that has been affected once or twice a day. It has come to notice that using the cream for a prolonged period of time or in large doses may cause its absorption into the body. This may reduce the amount of cortisol that is produced by adrenal glands. As such, using more than 50 ml of the cream a week or for a period of more than 14 days is forbidden. Also, using the cream along with occlusive dressings is not right as this kind of dressing increases absorption inside the body.
Side Effects
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] may cause side effects in some patients. Stinging and burning sensation of the skin on the area where the cream has been applied is a common side effect. Other than this, other common side effects are atrophy, tightening or cracking of the skin, excessive hair growth, inflammation, itching, rash, acne, fine reddish lines on the skin indicating broken capillaries, dryness, infected hair follicles, irritation, prickly heat and redness.

The prolonged or excessive use of Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] may also be the cause of sugar in the urine, high levels of blood sugar or Cushing’s syndrome. Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome are as follows: insomnia, acne, muscle weakness, depression, high blood pressure, obese trunk, stretch marks, fractures, wasted limbs, humped upper back, paranoia and retardation of growth.

Again, Cushing’s syndrome may lead to Diabetes Mellitus which may even turn life – threatening if not treated on time.
Drug Interaction
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] may cause drug interactions if co – administered with certain other medications. As such, care must be taken as to what other medications the patient may be having while therapy is going on. Doctors should be aware of all medications the patient is taking including over – the – counter, prescription, herbal, Ayurvedic or vitamins and minerals to make sure that all adverse drug interactions are ruled out. Special mention should be taken in case of topical anthralin.
Uses
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] is used in relieving inflammation and itching that may occur as a result of various skin problems.
Storage
Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] should be kept in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
Precaution
Large amount of Diprolene [Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream] should not be used. Nor should application be continued for more than 2 weeks at a stretch.
