	Description
	Budesonide [glucocorticoid] binds with high affinity to the glucocorticoid receptor. It is a high ratio of topical to systemic activity. Budesonide [glucocorticoid] is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid which exhibits potent glucocorticoid activity and weak mineralocorticoid activity. Inflammation is a vital component in the pathogenesis of asthma. Corticosteroids have inhibitory activities against multiple cells such as mast cells eosinophils neutrophils lymphocytes and macrophages and mediators such as histamine cytokines leukotrienes and eicosanoids which are involved in allergic and non-allergic-mediated inflammation. These anti-inflammatory actions of cortisteroids contribute to their efficacy in asthma. Rotacap is a capsule which has budesonide in a form of dry powder for inhalation. Budesonide rotacaps are available as Budesonide 100 mcg rotacaps Budesonide 200 mcg rotacaps and Budesonide 400 mcg rotacaps.


	How to use
	Budesonide [glucocorticoid] rotacaps are the capsules which are not to be swallowed but to be used with Rotahaler Device. The Rotahaler is a two-part mouthpiece that has to be snapped apart. The capsule has to be put into the device. Then the device has to be twisted and then inhale. Twisting the device the capsule breaks open. Then when inhaled the medicine goes straight into the lungs. Dosage is individual and should be adjusted according to disease severity. When the disease is under control the dosage should be ascertained by reaction to the lowest effective dose. For adults the recommended dose is 1-2 rotacaps of Budesonide 100 mcg / 200 mcg twice daily with a maximum dose of 4 rotacaps twice daily. In case of Budesonide 400mcg the recommended dose is 1 rotacap twice daily with a maximum dose of 2 rotacaps twice daily. For adolescents the recommended dose is 1 rotacap of Budesonide 200 mcg twice daily. In case of Budesonide 400mcg the recommended dose is 1 rotacap twice daily. For children the recommended dose is 1 rotacap of Budesonide 100 mcg twice daily. Patients should always have Budesonide rotacaps and rotahaler device available for use. Once asthma symptoms are controlled consideration may be given to reduce the dose of Budesonide gradually.


	Side Effects
	Budesonide [glucocorticoid] side effects reported in using Budesonide rotacaps are lightheadedness hoarseness upset stomach cough dry mouth rash sore throat bad taste in mouth and change in mucus color. Some serious budesonide side effects indicated are difficulty in breathing swelling of the face white patches in the throat mouth or nose tightness in chest ear infection sudden weight loss tightness in lungs irregular menstrual periods severe acne rarely and behavioral changes.


	Drug Interaction
	There are number of drugs which interact with Budesonide. Amphotericin B: Budesonide may enhance the hypokalemic effect of Amphotericin B. Antacids: Antacids may decrease the bioavailability of Budesonide. Antidiabetic agents: Budesonide may diminish the hypoglycemic effect of Antidiabetic agents. Antifungal Agents: Antifungal agents may decrease the metabolism of Budesonide. Loop diuretics: Budesonide may enhance the hypokalemic effect of Loop diuretics. Protease Inhibitors: Protease Inhibitors decrease the metabolism of Budesonide. Thiazide diuretics: Budesonide may enhance the hypokalemic effect of Thiazide diuretics. Apart from drugs Grapefruit juice may double systemic exposure of budesonide.


	Notes

	Uses
