	Description
	Calan [Verapamil Hcl] is an oral medication available in a form of tablets with various strengths of Verapamil hydrochloride or Verapamil HCl such as Calan 40 mg Calan 80 mg and Calan 120mg. Verapamil present in Calan is a class of drug known as Calcium channel blocker which helps to slow down the rate at which the calcium moves into the heart and blood vessels. This in turn relaxes the muscles of the heart and the blood vessels. Calan [Verapamil Hcl] allows better blood flow and helps to lower down the blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood. Calan [Verapamil Hcl] is used for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure angina or chest pain and certain heart rhythm disorders. As an off-label treatment it is used for migraine headache and mania due to bipolar disorder. Calan is not approved for use in children.


	How to use
	For the treatment of hypertension the initial recommended dose is Calan 80mg thrice daily i.e. 240 mg per day. It can be exceeded to 360 mg to 480 mg per day. Beyond 360 mg has no additional benefit. Patients who respond to lower doses should be considered with initial dose of Calan 40 mg thrice daily. For the treatment of angina or chest pain the initial recommended dose is 80mg to 120mg three times daily. Patients having increased response to verapamil can initiate the dosage with 40mg three times a day. For the treatment of irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmias the recommended dosage in digitalized patients with chronic atrial fibrillation is between 240 mg to 320 mg per day administering 3 to 4 times a day. The dosage for prophylaxis of non-digitalized patients is in between 240 mg to 480 mg per day administering 3 to 4 times a day. The result or effect will be readily visible during the first 48 hours. Any dosage exceeding 480 mg per day is not recommended.


	Side Effects
	The most common Calan [Verapamil Hcl] side effects reported administering the medication are constipation dizziness nausea low blood pressure and headache. Number of serious side effects with Calan [Verapamil Hcl] dosage reported are chest pain irregular heart rhythm bradycardia heart attacks strokes signs of congestive heart failure signs of very low blood pressure such as dizziness fainting or lightheadedness hallucinations or other psychotic disorders breast enlargement in men signs of allergic reactions like rashes hives itching swelling wheezing or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Other possible calan side effects reported are diarrhea dry mouth muscle cramps insomnia drowsiness hair loss sweating blurred vision tinnitus and erectile dysfunction.


	Drug Interaction
	Drug interactions may occur when Calan [Verapamil Hcl] is taken or combined with certain medications. Drugs that may interact with Calan may include alcohol aspirin benzodiazepines beta blockers and other blood pressure medications. These drugs interactions with Calan can alter the amount of medications in the blood increasing the risk of side effects or causing the medications to be less effective.


	Uses
	Calan [Verapamil Hcl] medication is used for the treatment of several conditions of the heart and blood vessels which includes high blood pressure or hypertension angina or chest pain including vasospastic angina unstable angina and chronic stable angina certain irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmias including chronic atrial flutter atrial fibrillation and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.


	Storage
	Calan [Verapamil Hcl] should be stored at a temperature between 15o to 25oC 59o to 77oF away from light heat and moisture. Keep away from children and pets.


	Precaution
	Patients having liver and kidney disorder congestive heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction should be cautious and consult the physician before administering Calan medication. Calan [Verapamil Hcl] medication passes through through breast milk. Lactating mother should consult the physician before taking Calan. Pregnant women or to be pregnant should consult the physician before taking Calan because it may not be safe during pregnancy.
