	Description
	Cleocin is composed of an active ingredient known as Clindamycin Hydrochloride and other inactive ingredients. Clindamycin Hydrochloride is the hydrated hydrochloride salt of Clindamycin. Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] is available in a form of capsules of different strengths of 75mg 150mg and 300mg of clindamycin for oral medication. Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] is used for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. It is also used for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci streptococci and pneumococci. It is used to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of the medication and other antibacterial drugs.


	How to use
	The recommended dose for adults in case of serious infections is Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] of 150mg to 300mg every 6 hours. In case of more severe infections the dosage should be 300mg to 450mg every 6 hours. The recommended dose for pediatric patients in case of serious infections is Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] of 8-16mg/kg daily divided into 3 to 4 equal dose. In case of more severe infections the dosage should be 16-20mg/kg daily divided into 3 to 4 equal dose. In case of β-hemolytic streptococcal infections medication should be continued for at least 10 days. Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should be administered with a full glass of water to avoid esophageal irritaton. Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should be discontinued if significant diarrhea occurs during the medication.


	Side Effects
	With the use of Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] the common Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] side effects reported are abdominal pain severe inflammation in the inner lining of colon and esophagus nausea vomiting diarrhea skin rashes vesiculobullous rashes hives higher than normal blood level of urea or other nitrogen containing compound in blood jaundice abnormalities in liver function higher blood level of urea [azotemia] less urination [oliguria] excess protein in urine [proteinuria] transient neutropenia and eosinophilia. Other rare side effects reported are polyarthritis pruritus vaginitis stevens-johnson syndrome and anaphylactoid reactions.


	Drug Interaction
	Neuromuscular blocking agents should not be combined with Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] as it enhances the action of the agent as Clindamycin has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties. Erythromycin and Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should not be administered concurrently because it may cause antagonism.


	Uses
	Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] is used primarily to treat infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria including skin and soft tissue infections infections of the respiratory tract peritonitis infections of female pelvis and genital tract. Cleocin [Clindamycin hydrochloride] is also used to treat infections caused by susceptible aerobic bacteria in case of patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins.


	Storage
	Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should be stored at a temperature between 20o-25oC 68o-77oF.


	Precaution
	Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should be prescribed with caution to patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease. Patients with moderate to severe liver disease should not go for the modification of Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] dosage. During prolonged therapy periodical tests of liver and kidney function and blood count is necessary. Cleocin [Clindamycin Hydrochloride] should not be used during pregnancy. Nursing mothers should consult the physician before administering Cleocin [Clindamycin hydrochloride]. Appropriate monitoring of organ systems’ function is necessary when prescribed to pediatric patients.
