Description
Combivent is composed of two active ingredients Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate. Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] comes in a metered-dose inhaler. It is primarily used to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] is a bronchodilator which means it helps to open up the airways. It is approved for the patients who have already tried with either of the two medications i.e. Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate. Combination of two medications works in different ways to open up the airways allowing more air into and out of the lungs. Ipratropium bromide is a class of drugs known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics which binds to muscarinic receptors in the airways and relaxes the smooth muscles of the airways. The other component Albuterol sulfate is a class of drugs known as beta-adrenergic receptor agonists which stimulates beta receptors in the body including those on the muscles around the airways. This stimulation causes the muscles to relax which open up the airways and allows more air into and out of the lungs.
How to use
Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] comes in a metered-dose Inhaler. Higher the metered-dose stronger is the reach to the lungs.
Shake the Inhaler vigorously each time for about 10 seconds just before every inhalation.
Test-spray if the medication is not used for more than 24 hours. To test-spray simply spray three times in the air.
The medication has to reach the lungs and to reach the lungs the patient has to inhale or breathe in strongly when the medication is sprayed.
Keep the mouth shut for about 30 seconds after each inhalation.
The standard dose of Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] regardless to age weight or other medical conditions is 2 inhalations 4 times daily. Depending on the severity of the condition and keep the symptoms in control the dosage can be increased to a maximum of 12 inhalations in 24 hours.
Side Effects
The most common Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] side effects are bronchitis upper respiratory tract infections headache trouble breathing and coughing.
Other common side effects are pain flu nausea pneumonia sore throat sinus infections and runny or stuffy nose.
Some serious adverse effects reported using Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] are worsening breathing problems severe constipation difficulty passing urine irregular heart rate arrhythmia low blood pressure hypotension vision disorder anxiety high blood pressure hypertension worsening of diabetes chest pain and allergic reactions such as unexplained rashes and swelling hives itching wheezing or difficulty breathing and difficulty swallowing.
Drug Interaction
There are certain drugs which interact when administered concurrently with Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] Inhaler
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor: Make both medications less effective.
Anticholinergic medication: Can cause dry mouth constipation dry eyes and difficulty passing urine.
Beta blockers: Make both medications less effective.
Diuretics: can increase the risk of low potassium level hypokalemia.
Digoxin: May decrease the level of digoxin in blood making less effective.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors: Can result in very low blood pressure.
Pramlintide: Can cause stomach upset nausea vomiting and constipation.
Tricyclic antidepressants: Can result in very low blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm arrhythmia.
Uses
Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] Inhaler is mainly used for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD such as wheezing coughing mucus production chest tightness and shortness of breath including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is also used for the treatment of asthma as an off-label treatment.
Storage
Combivent [Ipratropium bromide and Albuterol sulfate] Inhaler should be stored at a temperature of 25°C 77°F. Briefly storage is permitted at a temperature between 15°-30°C 59°-86°F. Do not puncture and do not use or store near heat or open flame.
Precaution
Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma and prostatic hyperplasia should be cautious.
Patients with convulsive disorders hyperthyroidism diabetes mellitus and those who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines should be cautious as it may cause cardiovascular disorder.
Inhaler should not be sprayed in eyes as it may cause discomfort increase intraocular pressure temporary blurred vision and acute eye pain.
Pregnant women and nursing mothers should be cautious and consult the physician.
