	Description
	The FDA sought market withdrawal of propoxyphene after receiving new clinical data showing that the drug puts patients at risk of potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. As a result of these data, combined with other information, including new epidemiological data, the agency concluded that the risks of the medication outweigh the benefits. Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] comes in two different strength Darvocet-N50 and Darvocet-N100. Darvocet-N has 2 active ingredients Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen and other inactive ingredients. The ratio of propoxyphene and acetaminophen present in Darvocet-N is 1:6.5 i.e. each tablet of Darvocet-N100 contains 100mg propoxyphene and 650mg acetaminophen. Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] is used for mild and moderate pain to severe pain treatment. Propoxyphene is a narcotic analgesic also known as opioid analgesic related to opium. It acts as a pain killer by blocking the receptors in the brain that are involved in the perception or sensation of pain. Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] is a non-narcotic analgesic and antipyretic– a pain reliever and fever reducer commonly used for the relief of fever headache minor aches and pains and is a major ingredient for cold and flu remedies. With the combination of propoxyphene and acetaminophen Darvocet-N gives a greater relief from severe pain such as cancer or post-operative pain.


	How to use
	Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] is an oral medication and should be taken exactly as prescribed by the physician. Amount should not be altered without the doctor’s approval. Treatment of pain works best when Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] is taken at the initial stage of the pain. Medication may not work well if waited for the pain to worsen. Darvocet-N should not be used more frequently or for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. More frequent use of the drug may not work well later. Then the dose has to be changed. The usual dosage is 100 mg propoxyphene and 650 mg acetaminophen every 4 hours as needed for pain. The maximum recommended dose of propoxyphene is 600mg. per day.


	Side Effects
	Recommended doses of Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] experience side effects like drowsiness dizziness nausea sedation and vomiting. Other adverse effects which are likely are headache constipation abdominal pain rashes lightheadedness hallucinations minor visual disturbance and euphoria. Dying of liver tissues may result from acute overdose of acetaminophen. Even death of renal papillary tissue may result from chronic acetaminophen use mostly when excess amount of dose is taken than recommended and combined with aspirin. Liver dysfunction is also associated with the treatment of Darvocet-N.


	Drug Interaction
	Central Nervous System-depressant or CNS-depressant effect like staggering blurred vision slurred speech dizziness and drowsiness is experienced after taking propoxyphene which becomes additive with that of other CNS-depressant drugs including alcohol. Alcohol should be avoided when Darvocet-N [Propoxyphene and Acetaminophen] is administered because it may increase the risk of side effects. Darvocet-N contains acetaminophen which may cause liver damage so daily use of alcohol especially when combined with acetaminophen will increase the risk of liver damage. Combined treatment of Darvocet-N and carbamazepine results in severe neurologic signs like coma. Serious interactions may occur if Darvocet-N is used with naltrexone. Darvocet-N should not be stopped or started without the approval of the physician.

	Storage
