	Description
	Cabergoline is the active ingredient of Dostinex. Dostinex [Cabergoline] is available in a form of capsule-shaped tablets containing 0.5mg of cabergoline. Dostinex [Cabergoline] belongs to a class of drugs known as Dopamine Receptor Agonists. Prolactin is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland of the brain which causes breast milk production. Dostinex [Cabergoline] is used to treat excessively unusual breast milk production hyperprolactinemic disorder. It acts on dopamine receptors in lactophilic hypothalamus cells to suppress or decrease the production of prolactin hormone in the pituitary gland of the brain and thereby improve the unusual breast milk production.


	How to use
	Before starting of the Dostinex [Cabergoline] medication to the patient cardiovascular evaluation should be performed and echocardiography should be done to check valvular disease. The recommended initial Dostinex [Cabergoline] dosage for this therapy is 0.25mg twice a week. Dosage can be increased by 0.25mg two times in a week up to a dosage of 1mg twice a week depending on the prolactin level. The dosage should not be increased rapidly more than every 4 weeks because a sufficient amount of time is to be given to observe the respond of the patient to the dose. If the patient does not respond adequately even with the increment of the dosage then it is recommended to continue with the lowest dose with the maximum effect achieved with other medication to attain satisfactory result. Patient undergoing long term treatment with Dostinex [Cabergoline] should go for a periodical check up of cardiac status and echocardiography should be considered. After maintaining normal prolactin level for 6 months the patient may discontinue the medication with the consultation of the physician.


	Side Effects
	The common Dostinex [Cabergoline] side effects indicated are Gastrointestinal: nausea constipation abdominal pain dyspepsia vomiting dry mouth diarrhea flatulence throat irritation and toothache. Central and peripheral nervous system: headache dizziness vertigo and paresthesia. Body as a whole: asthenia fatigue syncope influenza-like symptoms malaise periorbital and peripheral edema. Psychiatric: depression somnolence anorexia anxiety insomnia impaired concentration and nervousness. Cardiovascular: hot flashes hypotension dependent edema and palpitation. Female reproductive: breast pain and dysmenorrheal. Skin and appendages: acne and pruritus. Musculoskeletal: pain and arthralgia. Respiratory: rhinitis. Vision: abnormal vision.


	Drug Interaction
	Certain medications when administered concurrently with Dostinex [Cabergoline] can cause harmful interactions. These medications are for mental or mood disorders like phenothiazines butyrophenones thioxanthenes and metoclopramide. Patients using these medications should consult the physician before taking Dostinex [Cabergoline] medication.


	Uses
	Dostinex [Cabergoline] is used to treat certain hormone problem known as hyperprolactinemia that causes unusual breast milk production. It works by stimulating a part of the brain that can decrease the production of the hormone prolactin which causes milk production. Decreasing high prolactin level can improve the unusual breast milk production. There are off-label uses of Dostinex [Cabergoline] such as Dostinex [Cabergoline] is used to counteract certain side effects of SSRI antidepressant drugs like reduced libido and anorgasmia. It has a recreational use in reducing or eliminating refractory period. It is also used by the bodybuilders to control gynecomastia caused by increased prolactin level through the use of anabolic steroid.


	Storage
	Dostinex [Cabergoline] should be stored at a temperature between 20o-25oC 68o-77oF away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep away from children and pets.


	Precaution
	Starting Dostinex [Cabergoline] dosage higher than 1mg can cause orthostatic hypotension. Precaution should be taken while administering Dostinex [Cabergoline] with other medication used to lower the blood pressure. Patients with liver disease should be cautious as cabergoline is extensively metabolized by the liver. As hypersexuality and increased libido is indicated in using Dostinex [Cabergoline] similarly reduction of dose or discontinuation of the medication may cause decreased libido or impotence. Pregnant women should not use this medication if not necessary. Nursing mothers should not use this medication as it may pass through breast milk.
