	Description
	Alendronate sodium is the active component of Fosamax composition. Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] is available in a form of tablets for oral administration. It is also available in a form of oral solution for those unable to swallow tablets. Tablets have different strengths 5mg 10mg 35mg 40mg and 70mg of Alendronate sodium. Oral solution has 70mg of Alendronate sodium. Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increase the bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Other uses include the treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men and women and treatment of Paget’s disease of bone in men and women.


	How to use
	Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] should be taken at least half an hour before the first food beverage or medication if any with plain water only. If Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] is taken with or within 30 minutes before food beverage or other medication can reduce the absorption of Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] and lessen the effect of Fosamax [Alendronate sodium]. Tablets should be swallowed with a full glass of drinking water not mineral water to avoid esophageal irritation. It should be taken at the arising of the day and at least before an hour of first food. One should not lie down after the administration of Fosamax [Alendronate sodium]. For the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and for the treatment to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis the recommended dose is one 70mg tablet once weekly or one bottle of 70mg of oral solution once weekly or one 10mg tablet once daily. For the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women the recommended dose is one 35mg tablet once weekly or 5mg tablet once daily. For the treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men and women the recommended dose is one 5mg tablet once daily. For the treatment of Paget’s disease of bone in men and women the recommended dose is 40mg once daily for 6 months.


	Side Effects
	The most common Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] side effects indicated are constipation indigestion abdominal pain bone muscle and joint pain diarrhea headache and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Some infrequent serious Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] side effects are severe heartburn throat pain chest pain difficulty swallowing jaw or tooth problems signs and symptoms of allergic reactions bone muscle and joint pain.


	Drug Interaction
	The combination of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs and Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] may increase the risk of gastric ulcers and moreover these two drugs have the potential to irritate the upper gastrointestinal mucosa. Drugs milk and diet containing a high amount of calcium magnesium or aluminum antacids should not be taken in combination with Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] as it will decrease the effectiveness of Alendronate sodium. Combination of Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] medication and highly active vitamin D fluorides should be avoided.


	Uses
	Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women treat osteoporosis in men and women who take steroids treat osteoporosis in men and treat Paget’s disease of the bone in men and women.


	Storage
	Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] tablets should be stored at a temperature between 15o-30oC 59o-86oF. Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] oral solution to be stored at a temperature of 25oC 77oF excursion permitted to 15o-30oC 59o-86oF.


	Precaution
	Hypocalcemia should be corrected before the starting of Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] medication. For patients with Paget’s disease of bone and patients receiving glucocorticoid should ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. Patients with renal impairment is not recommended with Fosamax [Alendronate sodium] medication. Patients with hypersensitivity or allergic to Alendronate sodium or any other inactive ingredient of Fosamax should be cautious and contact the physician. Pregnant women and lactating mothers should be cautious.
