	Description
	Lasix [Furosemide] is composed of an active ingredient called Furosemide which is a Loop diuretic. Lasix [Furosemide] is called Loop diuretic because it works on the ascending Loop of Henle the tubule in a kidney. Lasix is prescribed for congestive heart failure treatment and edema treatment which is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in one or more cavities of the body or beneath the skin. Lasix [Furosemide] is a medicine for heart and also edema drug which is treated to eliminate water and salt from the body. Lasix is also used for Kidney Failure treatment. In the kidneys salt which is composed of sodium and chloride water and other small molecules are filtered out of blood and passed into the tubules of kidney. Sodium chloride and water that are filtered out of blood are reabsorbed into the blood before the filtered fluid becomes urine and ultimately eliminates from the body. This medicine for edema and heart which blocks the absorption of sodium chloride and water from the filtered fluid in the tubules of kidney causing a profound increase in the output of urine called diuresis. Diuretic effect of Furosemide can cause reduction of sodium chloride water and other minerals in the body. Therefore careful medical supervision is necessary on dosage and dose schedule which should be adjusted according to the individual patients needs. Nursing mothers should avoid breastfeeding while taking Lasix because furosemide is secreted in breast milk. Lasix comes in Tablets of 20mg 40mg 80mg and 500mg Oral solution of 10mg/ml and Injection of 10mg/ml.


	How to use
	For the treatment of edema the initial dose of Lasix [Furosemide] could be 20-80mg as a single dose for adults. The same dose of Lasix or an increased dose of 20-40mg may be administered every 6 to 8 hours later until the desired effect occurs. The dose may be given once or twice daily. Some patients may require even 600mg of Lasix daily. The initial dose for pediatric is 2 mg/kg and can be increased by 1-2 mg/kg after every 6 hours until the desired effect occurs. But more than 6mg/kg is not recommended. For the treatment of hypertension 80mg/day is recommended which usually to be divided into 40mg twice daily.


	Side Effects
	Common side effects of Lasix [Furosemide] are low blood pressure dehydration and electrolyte imbalance including depletion of potassium sodium magnesium and calcium. Less common side effects include jaundice excessive sensitivity to light photophobia ringing in ears tinnitus rash nausea pancreatitis dizziness abdominal pain anemia and diarrhea. Increased uric acid levels and blood sugar may occur.


	Drug Interaction
	Lasix [Furosemide] has potential interactions with the medication of aminoglycoside antibiotics like gentamicin which is another diuretic can cause hearing damage. Lasix competes with aspirin for elimination of urine by the kidneys. Associated use of Lasix and aspirin may lead to high blood level of aspirin and aspirin toxicity. Lasix may also restrain excretion of lithium by the kidneys which may result in increased blood levels of lithium and possible side effects from lithium. Intake of Lasix and Sucralfate should be separated by at least 2 hours because sucralfate reduces the action of Lasix by binding furosemide in the intestine and preventing its absorption into the body.


	Uses
	Lasix [Furosemide] is principally used for the treatment of edema associated with heart failure kidney failure or damaged kidney and chronic liver disease and hypertension. It is also used for certain breed of race horses like thoroughbred and standardbred to prevent bleeding through the nose during races.


	Storage
	Lasix [Furosemide] should be stored at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C 59-86 degrees F away from light and moisture.


	Precaution
	Patients allergic to sulfa may also be allergic to furosemide because of a similarity in the chemical structure of the medications. Lasix [Furosemide] should be avoided in kidney failure. Even though furosemide is important in treating excess fluid accumulation in patients with cirrhosis sudden loss of fluid and electrolytes in these patients can worsen kidney function and even cause the patient to go into a coma. Furosemide can cause lowering of blood potassium sodium and magnesium levels. Low potassium and magnesium levels can lead to heart rhythm abnormalities especially in patients already taking digoxin Lanoxin. Please visit the digoxin Lanoxin site for further information. Blood uric acid levels can increase during furosemide treatment but precipitation of acute gout is rare. Furosemide may increase the toxic effect of aminoglycoside antibiotics on the ear especially in patients with kidney dysfunction. Furosemide reduces the kidney excretion of lithium and can lead to lithium toxicity. Furosemide may impair kidney function when administered together with aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs. Periodic blood tests are performed to monitor kidney function and electrolytes during treatment with furosemide.
