	Description
	Motilium [Domperidone] is a medication used to relieve nausea and vomiting in patients of Parkinson’s disease who are being treated with other medications. This medication is also used to increase the movement and contraction of the bowel and the stomach. Motilium [Domperidone] may be used for purposes other than the ones stated here.


	How to use
	Motilium [Domperidone] should be taken exactly as advised by the doctor. Different patients need different doses. The doctor’s orders or the instructions on the label should be strictly followed for dosage. It is the severity of the condition the patient is suffering from that determines the number of doses to be taken per day, the period the treatment will continue for and the time gap between doses. Generally doctors prescribe 20 mg of the medication 3 to 4 times a day for treating nausea and vomiting in adult patients. In case the medication is used in treating gastrointestinal motility disorders the dosage is generally 10 mg, 3 to 4 times a day.


	Side Effects
	Motilium [Domperidone] may lead to certain side effects in some patients. Allergic reactions such as urticaria and rash, abdominal cramps and dystonic reactions are a few of the side effects that have been reported. In patients suffering from phaeochromocytoma, hypertensive crisis is a possible side effect. Side effects which may arise due to an overdose of Motilium [Domperidone] are difficulty in speech, disorientation, fainting, light-headedness, muscle control, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, loss of balance and swelling in the mouth. If any of these signs and symptoms is noticed, emergency medical help should be called for.


	Drug Interaction
	Motilium [Domperidone] may cause drug interactions when taken in combination with other drugs. In some cases, the drug interactions are too risky to be allowed to happen and in some cases, some combinations have to be used even if they cause an interaction. The doctor should be aware of all the other drugs the patient is taking before prescribing this medication, especially the following drugs: 1) MAO inhibitors or Monoamine oxidase such as furazolidone 2) phenelzine ( Nardil) 3) selegilene (Eldepryl) 4) procarbazine (Matulane) 5) tranylcypromine (Parnate)


	Uses
	Motilium [Domperidone] is used to treat nausea and vomiting in patients of Parkinson’s disease who are being treated with other medications. It is used to treat delayed gastric emptying. It is also used as an anti-emetic in patients undergoing radiation and cystostatic therapy.


	Storage
	Motilium [Domperidone] should preferably be kept at a temperature below 25°C. It should be kept away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.


	Precaution
	Motilium [Domperidone] should not be prescribed to patients who are allergic to Domperidone. It is also not to be prescribed to patients who have prolactinoma, which is a pituitary tumor. Motilium [Domperidone] has not been found to have any adverse affect on the fetus and hence can be used safely on pregnant women. Caution should be exercised while administering this medication to breastfeeding mothers because it may pass onto the baby through milk.
