	Description
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is an oral chemotherapeutic agent which is used in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.


	How to use
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is not prescribed to be used on its own. Rather it should be used in combination with other medications. In the initial phase of therapy, this medication should be used only once in 24 hours. It can be taken with or without food. Therapy should not be stopped until maximum clinical improvement has been achieved and there has been permanent bacteriological conversion. This medication should be continued as long as has been advised by the doctor, even if the apparent symptoms of tuberculosis disappear. It is very important that doses are not missed.


	Side Effects
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] may lead to side effects in some patients. Some of these are not serious and some of them are extremely so. Below are a few side effects which, in case they occur, the doctor should be consulted as early as possible. o chills o swelling and pain in joints, especially in the ankle, knee and big toe o abdominal pain o headache o nausea o confusion o vomiting o loss of appetite A few side effects which are rare and which should be treated as medical emergency if they do occur are: o blurred vision o color blindness (patient sees only red and green colors) o eye pain o fever o numbness o burning pain o joint pain o skin rash o burning o tingling sensation in the feet and hands The side effects mentioned here are not conclusive. In case other signs and symptoms are noticed in patients who are being administered Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride], the doctor should be consulted.


	Drug Interaction
	There may be drug interactions when Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is taken in combination with other medications. Antacids are known to decrease the absorption of this medication. If the patient has to be administered antacids, it should be spaced several hours apart from this medication. The doctor should be aware of all the medications the patient is being administered before prescribing Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride].


	Uses
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is used in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis in combination with at least another anti-tuberculosis medication. This medication works well in the following combinations: o Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride]+ Isoniazid o Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride]+ Isoniazid + Streptomycin


	Storage
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is to be stored between temperatures of 20-25 degrees C. It should be kept away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.


	Precaution
	Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] is not recommended to be used in children below the age of 13 years. It is not recommended on patients who are allergic to Ethambutol. This medication should not be used on patients who are suffering from optic neuritis, which is an eye disease. Myambutol [Ethambutol Hydrochloride] should be used with caution in patients who have a known medical history of kidney disease, HIV infection, gout, cataracts, nerve problem and diabetic retinopathy. This medication can be used safely on pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers as no adverse reactions have been reported.
