Nizoral [Ketoconazole] is a medication used in the treatment of systemic fungal infections like chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, candidiasis, oral thrush, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, chromomycosis, candiduria, histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis. This medication is not recommended for use in fungal meningitis. This medication may be prescribed by doctors for other purposes also.
How to use
Nizoral [Ketoconazole] should be administered in exactly the way as has been prescribed by the doctor. Generally one tablet once a day is the usual dosage. It can be administered with or without food.
This medication should be taken regularly so that the body can maintain a constant level. This helps in deriving maximum benefit from it. Stopping the medication without being advised by the doctor to do so is not recommended. The medication should be continued for as long as has been prescribed. In case a dose has been missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, only if time for the next dose is not too near. Side Effects
A few patients who were being administered Nizoral [Ketoconazole] have reportedly been diagnosed with liver dysfunction. Symptoms of liver dysfunction are unusual fatigue, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, dark urine, dark stools and jaundice. In case these symptoms are noticed, the doctor should be consulted as early as possible.
Drug Interaction
If Nizoral [Ketoconazole] is administered simultaneously with terfenadine, it may lead to ventricular tachycardia, torsades de pointes and other serious cardiovascular adverse events, even death.
If Nizoral [Ketoconazole] is administered simultaneously with astemizole, it may cause elevation in plasma levels of astemizole and also its active metabolite desmethylastemizole. This may lead prolonged QT intervals.
Nizoral [Ketoconazole] should not be administered with cisapride as it may cause ventricular tachycardia, torsades de pointes and other serious cardiovascular adverse events.
Notes
b Ketoconazole may cause liver damage. Inform your doctor if you drink alcohol in large or small amounts. Inform your doctor about any and all medication you maybe taking in any form.
Inform your doctor if you have/have ever had liver disease.
Do Not Take Cisapride Terfenadine or Astemizole whilst on a course with this medication. /b

Nizoral [Ketoconazole] is used in the treatment of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, candidiasis, oral thrush, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, chromomycosis, candiduria, histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis. It is also known to be prescribed in patients suffering from severe recalcitrant cutaneous dermatophyte infections.
Storage
Nizoral [Ketoconazole] should be stored between 59-86 degrees F. It should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep out of reach of children.
Precaution
Nizoral [Ketoconazole] should not be prescribed on patients who have a known allergy to Ketoconazole and other "azole" drugs such as fluconazole and itraconazole.
This medication has reportedly caused hepatic toxicity and even death. Patients who are being administered should be kept under close vigilance.
Before prescribing Nizoral [Ketoconazole], a doctor should be aware If the patient has a history of liver problems, alcohol use, low cortisol, hepatitis B, low levels of testosterone, adrenal insufficiency and Addison’s disease.
Administration of Nizoral [Ketoconazole] may cause the patient to become drowsy and dizzy. Driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided while treatment is going on. Alcohol consumption should preferably be stopped while treatment is going on.
