Prilosec is found as a delayed release capsule and delayed release oral suspension for oral administration. The active ingredient for Prilosec as delayed release capsule is omeprazole where as the active ingredient for Prilosec as delayed release oral suspension is omeprazole magnesium. Prilosec [omeprazole] is available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg capsules where as each packet of Prilosec [omeprazole magnesium] is available in 2.8mg and 11.2mg of omeprazole magnesium which is equivalent to 2.5mg and 10mg of omeprazole. These medications are used for the treatment of duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, heartburn, symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis and pathological hypersecretory conditions.
How to use
The recommended dose for the adult patients suffering from active duodenal ulcer is 20mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] once daily for 4 weeks or it can be extended to 8 weeks.
The recommended dose for the adult patient suffering from gastric ulcer is 40mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] once daily for 4-8 weeks.
The recommended dose for the adult patient suffering from symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and no esophageal lesions is 20mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] daily for 4 weeks.
The recommended dose for the adult patient suffering from erosive esophagitis and accompaning symptomatic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is 20mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] daily for 4-8 weeks.
The recommended dose for the adult patient suffering from pathological hypersecretory conditions is 60mg once daily to a maximum of 120mg of Prilosec [omeprazole or omeprazole magnesium] thrice daily.
Prilosec [omeprazole] delayed release capsule should be administered orally and before meal with antacids. The capsule should be swallowed whole. If the patient is unable to swallow the intact capsule then the alternate Prilosec [omeprazole magnesium] delayed release oral suspension should be administered.
Side Effects
The most common adverse effects indicated in administering the medication are headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and flatulence.
Other side effects indicated are upper respiratory infection, constipation, regurgitation, rash, dizziness, asthenia, back pain, fatigue, fever, tachycardia, dry mouth, jaundice, dry skin, vertigo, muscle weakness and muscle cramps.
Drug Interaction
If Prilosec [omeprazole] is administered along with tacrolimus, the serum level of tacrolimus may increase.
Concurrent use of proton pump inhibitors and atazanavir is not recommended as it decreases atazanavir plasma concentrations and there by reduces its therapeutic effect.
For the treatment of Gastric ulcer, the antacid is taken concurrently with Prilosec [omeprazole], so that, omeprazole does not interfere with the drugs.
Uses
Prilosec [omeprazole] is used for the short term treatment of active duodenal ulcer in adults. It is also used for the short term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer in adults. Treatment of heartburn and other symptoms related to GERD in pediatric and adult patients are also indicated. It is also used in pediatric and adult patients for a short term treatment and maintain healing of erosive esophagitis. Prilosec [omeprazole] is also used for the long term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions in adults.
Storage
Prilosec [omeprazole] delayed release capsule should be stored between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Prilosec [omeprazole magnesium] delayed release oral suspension should be stored at a temperature of 25°C (77°F).
Precaution
In gastric corpus biopsies Atrophic gastritis is noticed from the patients treated for long term with Prilosec [omeprazole].
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been indicated with patients going through penicillin therapy.
Patients with liver disorder should be cautions on dosage as they have to reduce the dosage.
Pregnant women should be cautious and consult the physician before administering.
As the medication passes through the breast milk, nursing mothers should consult the physician before administering the drug.
