Protopic is an ointment which is composed of an active ingredient Tacrolimus and other inactive ingredients. Tacrolimus is a class of medicine known as Topical immunomodulator. Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment is used to inhibit skin inflammation in eczema and relieve the symptoms of conditions like redness and itching. There are two types of Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment; one is 0.03% which can be used by both children aged 2 years and above and adults aged 16 years and above; and another 0.1% which is suitable for adults. How to use
In case of adults aged 16 years and above, Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment 0.03% or 0.1% can be used according to the severity of condition which will be directed by the physician. A thin layer of the ointment should be applied on the affected area. The ointment should be rubbed in gently and completely to control signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment should be applied twice daily. When signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis resolves, the medication should be stopped.

Side Effects
Very common Protopic [Tacrolimus] side effects indicated using the ointment are usually a burning sensation and itching at the application site.
Other common side effects indicated are sensation of warmth, pins and needles or pain at the application site; redness, rash, irritation, herpes simplex infections such as eczema herpeticum and cold sores; infections and inflammation of hair follicles, increased skin sensitivity especially to hot and cold, itching, skin irritation after taking alcohol or facial flushing.
Rare uncommon side effects such as acne and swollen lymph glands are also indicated.
Impetigo is also indicated in both adults and children using Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment, twice weekly as maintenance treatment.
Drug Interaction
Medicines like diltiazem, erythromycin, itraconazole and ketoconazole should be used with cautions in people using Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment, as these medicines may increase the blood level of tacrolimus if it is absorbed into the blood stream.

Storage
Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment should be stored at a temperature of 25°C (77°F), excursion permitted to 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).
Precaution
Protopic [Tacrolimus] ointment is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth or nose.
Covering the area of application with bandages or dressings is not recommended.
Avoid drinking alcohol while using the ointment.
Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Do not receive light treatment. Avoid exposure of skin to sunlight.
Precautions should be taken if the patient is suffering from liver failure or having swollen lymph glands.
Not recommended for nursing mothers.
