	Description
	Prozac is an antidepressant drug for a long term basis. It contains Fluoxetine hydrochloride. Fluoxetine is a group of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors SSRIs. Prozac increases the amount of serotonin a natural substance in the brain which helps maintain mental balance. It is used for Major Depressive Disorder treatment MDD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder treatment OCD for both adult and pediatric patients. It is also used for the treatment of some eating disorders like Bulimia nervosa and Anorexia nervosa and also panic attack. Prozac is also used for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder like mood swings fatigue bloating breast tenderness and irritability. Prozac and olanzapine is combined to use for acute treatment of depression associated with Bipolar Disorder and Treatment of Resistant Depression where the patient does not respond to 2 separate trials of antidepressants of adequate dose. Prozac comes in 3 different packs – Prozac Prozac oral solution and Prozac Weekly. Prozac weekly is a delayed-released capsule. Prozac pulvule contains fluoxetine hydrochloride equivalent to 10mg 20mg or 40 mg of fluoxetine. Prozac oral solution contains fluoxetine hydrochloride equivalent to 20mg per 5ml of fluoxetine. Prozac weekly contains fluoxetine hydrochloride equivalent to 90mg of fluoxetine.


	How to use
	Generally Prozac is taken daily in different doses for different kinds of patients of different types of depressions. Prozac oral solution is generally recommended for patients of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Prozac Weekly is more powerful than Prozac and is to be taken once a week. Prozac Weekly is recommended to the patients who were using Prozac. For Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder an initial dose of Prozac 20mg/day for adult and Prozac 10mg/day for pediatric 8-18 yrs. in the morning is recommended. If insufficient clinical improvement is observed after several weeks the dose can be extended to a maximum of 80mg and 20mg in case of adult and pediatric for MDD and a maximum of 80mg and 60mg in case of adult and pediatric for OCD respectively. In case of Bulimia Nervosa the initial dose can be Prozac 20mg/day in the morning. But Prozac 60mg/day is recommended as it is effective for the patients. Panic Disorder patients are recommended to initiate the treatment with Prozac 10mg/day. After a week it should be increased to 20mg/day. It can be extended to 60mg. In case of Bipolar I Disorder the dosage should be 5mg of oral olanzapine and 20 mg of fluoxetine in the evening once daily without regard to meals. Later it can be extended to 12.5mg of oral olanzapine and 50mg of fluoxetine. For Treatment Resistant Depression the dosage should be 5mg of oral olanzapine and 20mg of fluoxetine. It can be extended to 20mg of oral olanzapine and 50mg of fluoxetine. Prozac should be taken exactly as it is prescribed by the physician. The direction should be followed strictly.


	Side Effects
	Some common side effects of Prozac are Headache Vomiting Diarrhea Drowsiness Nausea Dry mouth Loss of appetite Sweating Nervousness and Dizziness. The physician should be consulted immediately if the patient experience severe nervousness and restlessness difficulty sleeping panic attack or trouble breathing. For allergic reaction like itching swelling and skin rash physician should be consulted.


	Drug Interaction
	Patients taking Protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV should carefully use the medication of Sildenafil Citrate. Protease inhibitors restrain the metabolism of sildenafil multiplying the plasma levels of sildenafil which increases the probability and severity of side-effects. Patients using Protease inhibitors are recommended not to use more than 25mg dose of Sildenafil Citrate every 48 hours. By lowering the medications of Sildenafil Citrate the effects of blood pressure increases. Patients taking nitrates are not recommended to use Sildenafil Citrate because Sildenafil increases the blood pressure lowering the effects of nitrates. Patients taking medications like Erythromycin Ketoconazole Nizoral Cimetidine Tagamet Mibefradil Posicor and Itraconazole Sporanox should be observed very carefully if Sildenafil is used because these medications can cause a drastic increase of Sildenafil in the body which can be harmful.


	Uses
	Prozac is used for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder premenstrual dysphoric disorder Bulimia nervosa and panic disorder. Prozac is also used for the certain kind of acute treatment of depression like Bipolar I Disorder and Treatment Resistant Depression with the combination of olanzapine.


	Storage
	Prozac should be stored in dry place at 20o-25o C 68o-77o F away from direct sunlight and moisture.
