	Description
	Serevent Inhaler [Salmeterol Xinafoate] is meant for long-term use by patients of asthma for treatment and maintenance of the said disease. It is also know to be used as prevention of bronchospasm induced by exercise.


	How to use
	Serevent Inhaler [Salmeterol Xinafoate] should be used only if it has been specifically prescribed by the doctor. The inhaler has to be shaken before use every time. The cap should be removed from the mouthpiece and strapped to the actuator. The canister should be firmly and fully inserted into the actuator. Each new inhaler should be tested before use. For this, it has to be sprayed four times in the air. This should be done even when it has not been used for more than a month. The mouthpiece should be placed in the mouth and the inhaler held upright. The lips should be closed around it. Alternatively, the inhaler can be placed 1 to 2 inches away from the mouth, which should be kept open. Next the patient has to breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouth while pressing down the top of the canister firmly with the index finger. The inhalation should continue and then the breath should be held for 5-10 seconds. Now the inhaler should be removed from the mouth and the patient should breathe out. After a gap of about 30- seconds, the inhaler should be shaken again and the inhalation process repeated. The cap should be replaced after each use.


	Side Effects
	Serevent Inhaler [Salmeterol Xinafoate] may cause side effects such as headache, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramping and tremor in some patients. These symptoms usually go away with proper treatment. In case a patient experiences increased trouble in breathing, the doctor should be consulted as early as possible.


	Drug Interaction
	Serevent Inhaler [Salmeterol Xinafoate] may cause drug interactions when taken in combination with other medications, leading the patient to a condition of being heavily sedated. Caution should be exercised if this medication is being used with any of the following: • Arsenic Trioxide • Bepridil • Antibiotics such as erythromycin, gatifloxacin and clarithromycin • Cisapride • Halofantrine • Methadone • Probucol • Terfenadine • Thyroid hormones • Astemizole • Caffeine • Chloroquine • Droperidol • Levomethadyl • Medications for hypertension • Medications for treating depression or mental illness • Medications for colds and breathing difficulties • Medications to control heart rhythm • Pentamidine • Diuretics • Steroid hormones for instance cortisone, hydrocortisone and dexamethasone
