	Description
	Stromectol is meant for oral medication. It is available in 3mg tablets with an active ingredient known as Ivermectin and other inactive ingredients. Stromectol is a semisynthetic anthelmintic agent. It works by killing sensitive parasites. Stromectol is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent. Stromectol is mainly used for the treatment of river blindness the world’s third leading infectious cause of blindness caused by a nematode a roundworm which can live for up to fifteen years in the human body. Nematode is transmitted into the human body through the bite of a black fly. The worms spread throughout the body and when they die they cause intense itching and a strong immune system response that can destroy the nearby tissue such as eye. Stromectol is also used for the treatment of strongyloidiasis an intestinal infection caused by another type of nematode. Stromectol is found to be effective against other worm infestations. Though it is not approved but still Stromectol is used for the treatment of mites such as scabies.


	How to use
	For the treatment of strongyloidiasis the recommended dose of Stromectol is a single dose to provide approximately 200 mcg of ivermectin per kg of body weight. Tablets should be administered empty stomach with water. For the treatment of river blindness or onchocerciasis the recommended dose of Stromectol is a single dose to provide approximately 150 mcg of ivermectin per kg of body weight. Tablets should be administered empty stomach with water. For the treatment of individual patients retreatment may be considered at intervals of 3 months.


	Side Effects
	When the patients are treated for strongyloidiasis with the following doses of 170 to 200 mcg/kg of Stromectol certain adverse effects are reported like abdominal pain fatigue anorexia constipation diarrhea nausea vomiting dizziness vertigo and rash. When Stromectol is used for the treatment of onchocerciasis with the dose of 100 to 200 mcg/kg of Stromectol certain adverse effects are reported like facial edema peripheral edema orthostatic hypotension sudden excessive fall of blood pressure when a person stands up rapid beating of heart or tachycardia and myalgia or muscle pain. Few opthalmological side effects are reported after the treatment of Stromectol they are eyelid edema conjunctivitis abnormal sensation in the eyes inflammation of cornea or keratitis and abnormal excessive increase of hemoglobin and eosinophil in blood. Other than these worsening of bronchial asthma hepatitis seizures and elevation of liver enzymes and bilirubin are also reported adverse effects occurred due to the treatment of Stromectol.


	Drug Interaction
	Physician should be informed about the patient’s intake of prescribed and non-prescribed drugs. Presence of ivermectin in Stromectol can affect certain laboratory test results. So the laboratory personnel and the physician should be alerted and informed about the patient’s drug in use. Stromectol shoul not be started or stopped without the approval of the physician.


	Over Dose
	If overdose is suspected contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include swelling severe headache dizziness nausea vomiting or diarrhea tiredness or weakness.

	Missed Dose
	If you miss a dose use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.


	Uses
	Stromectol is used to treat certain infections with parasitic roundworms curing parasitic infections by paralyzing or killing the parasites. Stromectol is used for the treatment of strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis. Off-label use of Stromectol is done for the treatment against lice and mites such as scabies.


	Storage
	Stromectol should be stored at a temperature below 30oC 86oF away from light heat and moisture.


	Precaution
	Before taking ivermectin tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Tell your doctor your medical history especially of: immune system problems e.g. HIV breathing problems asthma recent foreign travel Loa-loa endemic areas. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
