Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] is a prescription drug used in the treatment and management of seizures. It belongs to the class of drugs called anticonvulsants, also called antiepileptics. This drug is used in the treatment of partial seizures in children who are above the age of 2 years and adults. This drug may be administered on its own or in combination with other drugs. How to use
Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] is a prescription drug and should not be administered without consultation with a doctor. Dosage will vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of the condition, age and response to therapy. Doses should be administered at approximately evenly spaced intervals. Suddenly stopping medication without consulting the doctor is not recommended as it may lead to worsening of the condition. In case the drug worsens the seizures, the doctor should be consulted immediately.
Side Effects
Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] may cause side effects in some patients. Common side effects which are not very serious and usually go away by themselves are as follows: dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, trouble in sleeping, dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea, headache, acne and constipation. In case these symptoms persist, the doctor should be consulted.
Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] may cause serious side effects such as double vision, involuntary eye movements, difficulty in concentrating, trouble in walking, diminishing sense of touch, change in vision, difficulty in speech, loss of coordination, uncontrolled muscle movements and tremors. In case any of these symptoms do occur, the doctor should be notified immediately.
Very serious but rare side effects of the drug are as follows: chest pain, easy bruising and bleeding, mood changes, abdominal pain, dark urine, yellow eyes and skin, sore throat, bloody stools and increase in urination.
This drug is also known to cause behavioral changes in rare cases such as anxiety, suicidal thoughts and hostility.
In case of an allergic reaction, emergency medical help should be called for as the condition may be life-threatening.

Notes

Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage
Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] should be stored in a cool and dry area and out of reach of children and pets. It should be kept away from excess heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
Precaution
Trileptal [Oxcarbazepine] should not be prescribed to patients who have a known allergy to Oxcarbazepine or any of its components.
