Vasotec is composed of an active ingredient known as Enalapril and other inactive ingredients. Vasotec [Enalapril] is used to treat high blood pressure, left ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure. It belongs to a class of drugs known as Angiotensin - Converting Enzyme inhibitors or ACE inhibitors. It works by blocking angiotensin - converting enzyme. Angiotensin – converting enzyme is normally a part of reaction in the body which causes the blood vessels to narrow. By blocking this enzyme Vasotec [Enalapril] causes blood vessels to relax which lowers blood pressure. It also increases the efficiency of the heart by not letting the heart to work as hard and can pump out more blood to the rest of the body which help a person with congestive heart failure. Vasotec [Enalapril] comes in a form of tablets with different strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg.
How to use
Recommended normal daily dose of Vasotec [Enalapril] is 10mg to 40mg daily, taken as a single dose or two equal divided doses.
For patients with high blood pressure, the recommended initial dosage of Vasotec [Enalapril] is 5mg once daily. Based on blood pressure response, vasotec’s efficacy and side effects, the dosage can be increased or decreased. If the patient with hypertension is taking diuretics, then the recommended initial dosage should be 2.5mg once a day.
For patients with liver disease, liver failure, kidney disease and kidney failure, the dosage should be on a lower side depending on the severity of the condition. The patient should be under close supervision.
For patients with congestive heart failure, the recommended initial dosage of Vasotec [Enalapril] is 2.5mg twice daily. Based on vasotec’s efficacy and side effects, the dosage can be increased or decreased.
For patients with heart failure and kidney disease or low salt level in blood, the initial recommended dosage is 2.5mg once a day. The patient should be under close supervision.
For patients with left ventricular dysfunction, the recommended initial dosage of Vasotec [Enalapril] is 2.5mg once daily. The dosage may be increased at a regular interval to a maximum of 20mg.
For children to lower the blood pressure, the initial recommended dosage of Vasotec [Enalapril] is 0.08mg per kg of body weight to a maximum of 5mg per day. The dosage will be adjusted based on the blood pressure response or side effects.
Vasotec [Enalapril] can be taken with or without food.
It should be taken with a glass of water.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Vasotec [Enalapril] in patients with high blood pressure are headache, dizziness and fatigue.
Common side effects of Vasotec [Enalapril] in patients with congestive heart failure are dizziness, low blood pressure and cough.
Other side effects in patients with high blood pressure and congestive heart failure are syncope, unexplained rash, weakness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; shortness of breath, vertigo and urinary tract infection.
Rare side effects indicated are allergic reactions, myocardial infarction, stroke, atrial fibrillation, pancreatitis, hepatitis, indigestion, depression, confusion, insomnia; blurred vision, changes in taste, hair loss and impotence.
Drug Interaction
Vasotec [Enalapril] when taken concurrently with diuretics may decrease the blood pressure too much.
Vasotec [Enalapril] when taken concurrently with potassium-sparing diuretics may decrease the blood pressure too much as well as increase the potassium level in blood too high.
Patients taking Vasotec [Enalapril] who received gold injections have certain reactions like facial flushing, nausea, vomiting and low blood pressure.
Vasotec [Enalapril] when taken concurrently with lithium may increase the level of lithium in blood and increase the risk of lithium toxicity.
Vasotec [Enalapril] when taken concurrently with potassium may increase the potassium level in blood too high and can cause serious problems.

Storage
