Nevirapine as an active ingredient and with other inactive ingredients constitute the medicine Viramune in a form of tablet with the strength of 200mg of Nevirapine; and oral suspension with the strength of 50mg of Nevirapine in every 5ml of Viramune. Viramune [Nevirapine] belongs to a type of medicine known as Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs). HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Like other viruses, HIV uses a person’s own cells to reproduce. But there is a difference. First it converts its genetic material from RNA to DNA by a special protein known as Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme. To create DNA, this enzyme uses several different protein building blocks. Then these DNA genes allow HIV to multiply. Viramune [Nevirapine] works by attaching itself to Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme, stopping it from making DNA. HIV cannot multiply without DNA. Viramune [Nevirapine] is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. It helps by stopping HIV infecting uninfected cells in the body. But it cannot help or cure the cells that are already being infected by the virus.
