Zelnorm [Tegaserod Maleate] is used in the treatment of women suffering from chronic, severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is also used in the treatment of chronic constipation in women who are less than 55 years of age. This medication is known to increase the production of a certain chemical in the intestines called serotonin, which speeds up bowel movement. How to use
Zelnorm [Tegaserod Maleate] is to be used only if prescribed by a doctor or a healthcare professional. Instructions on the label should be followed. Generally a dosage of two tablets twice a day is recommended. Medication should be administered on an empty stomach along with a glass of water. Chewing or breaking the tablet is forbidden; rather it should be swallowed whole at once.

The complete course of the treatment should be completed. If symptoms do not improve after administration for 4-6 weeks, the doctor should be consulted.

Side Effects
Zelnorm [Tegaserod Maleate] may cause side effects in patients using it. Common but less serious side effects of this medication are headache, migraine, dizziness, nausea, gas, mild stomach pain, joint pain or back pain. These side effects are not serious if they go away within a few days, but in case they persist, the doctor should be consulted immediately.
This medication may also cause serious side effects such as a worsening stomach pain, ongoing diarrhea, blood in the stools and severe stomach cramps or pain. In case they occur, the doctor should be called as early as possible.
